Thesis Master Preface
In December of 2007 I was informed that I would set up the Office of Plan for the formation of the planning rules of the City of Grosseto, coordinated by Prof. Gianfranco Corelli, began for me a difficult period as interesting as I embarked on a training / work that would take me to make decisions crucial to my life as a student. I still had some exams to pass, and great indecision about the topic of the dissertation.
After several months of work, gone to deepen the knowledge framework of the Structure Plan, which support reference for the formation of the planning rules, I had no doubts about what should be the central issues to deal with my thesis : an area stimulating, rich in natural resources, scenic and historic settlement
that bind me my roots, and a project that aims to link the city of Grosseto to its territory. Thus was born the thesis entitled "The territorial importance in
Urban Project."
Introduction
The town of Grosseto has never had a peaceful relationship with his campaign because of the endless swamps that enveloped the plain from the center to the coast and since under the hills to the north present the capital, marshy land infested by malaria, generating death.
The separation between town and country across the border called the Medici walls has always been the goal of life, hope to survive the "bad air" that squeezed in a vice almost lethal anyone living in the Maremma.
Although not the direct cause of the disease that killed every year a huge number of people, the stagnant waters had a major role in its spread, because they created this warm and humid microclimate essential in the reproductive cycle of mosquitoes, which were in the swamps their ideal environment.
"There is nothing more certain, physics and medicine, stagnant water that infect the air and threaten the lives of human individuals. " So when sentenced Leopold, shortly after his inauguration to the throne of the Grand Ducal "Tuscan country," he visited in the desolate Maremma, where he was able to see firsthand the harmful effects
unhealthy air over his subjects. The Maremma has always been regarded, by all leaders of the state Toscano and after the unification of Italy by the ruling governments, as a potential for agricultural purposes, as a mortal sin to which to turn their backs, and for this reason were the huge difficulty of cleaning the infested waters, and above all to create land for finally make the local population the right dignity of life, never rooted to the bottom because of the difficulty of living.
Only after 1900, you can see the signs of a structured and foundational roots of local identities Maremma, based in all respects on agricultural work and confidence in the future, which for centuries has been lacking due to the force of nature.
So the city of Grosseto has always had enormous potential inherent in its essence: these, brought to light only in recent decades, have transformed a small walled city of three hundred souls in the early del'800, in the capital province of eighty thousand people.
The physical link the city with its territory, however, remained at a level embryonic urbanization "violent" has always created a rift with neighboring agricultural areas, reflecting the consequences in the dormitory suburbs, devoid of local identity, no additional connectors and social spaces without aggregation.
The major themes addressed in this work covers both the territory and the city: at the local level were highlighted, and historical peculiarities of development, landscape and environmental and socio-cultural,
ie territorial importance, for the city has instead proposed a Project Urban, who try to change that relationship by securing the assets described above found in the historical city established.
The identification of territorial importance, in Urban Design is the purpose of the work (hence the title of the thesis). It's primary objective is to secure the bond, and real physical elements, connecting these two elements (town and country) to separate nature. The historic center of the city, characterized by the tissues of older plant assumes the role of "attractor place and functional and cultural center of gravity of the territorial systems that revolve around it. And a strong appeal for people, goods, tourists, business cheap to distribute, to the territory that both robbed in the past, in terms of livability, but that both can return to the current population.
